Understanding ADHD
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning and development. At Envision Medical Care in Ripley, WV, we provide compassionate counseling and comprehensive care for individuals of all ages living with ADHD.
The Three Presentations of ADHD
1. Predominantly Inattentive
- Difficulty sustaining attention on tasks
- Frequently losing things necessary for activities
- Easily distracted by unrelated thoughts or stimuli
- Difficulty organizing tasks and managing time
- Often makes careless mistakes
2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive
- Fidgeting, squirming, or difficulty sitting still
- Talking excessively
- Difficulty waiting for one's turn
- Interrupting or intruding on others
- Acting as if "driven by a motor"
3. Combined Presentation
A combination of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, which is the most common presentation.
ADHD Across the Lifespan
Children
In children, ADHD often manifests as difficulty in school—trouble paying attention, completing homework, following instructions, and getting along with peers. Early identification and intervention are crucial for setting children up for academic and social success.
Adults
Many adults live with undiagnosed ADHD, attributing their struggles to personal failings rather than a treatable condition. Adult ADHD can manifest as chronic disorganization, difficulty meeting deadlines, relationship challenges, and emotional dysregulation.
Our Counseling Approach
At Envision Medical Care, we take a holistic, individualized approach to ADHD management:
Comprehensive Assessment
Our providers conduct thorough evaluations, including behavioral assessments, symptom history, and discussion of how ADHD impacts daily life at home, school, and work.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps individuals identify negative thought patterns and develop practical strategies for managing ADHD symptoms, including time management, organizational skills, and emotional regulation techniques.
Behavioral Strategies
For children, we work with parents and families to implement behavioral strategies that reinforce positive behaviors and create structured environments that support success.
Medication Management
When appropriate, our providers can prescribe and manage ADHD medications, carefully monitoring effectiveness and side effects to find the optimal treatment plan.
Family Counseling
ADHD affects the entire family. Our family counseling sessions help parents, siblings, and partners understand ADHD and develop supportive communication and coping strategies.
Practical Tips for Living with ADHD
- Create routine and structure — Consistent daily schedules reduce the cognitive load of decision-making
- Break tasks into smaller steps — Large projects can feel overwhelming; breaking them down makes them manageable
- Use visual reminders — Calendars, checklists, and timers help maintain focus and track progress
- Prioritize sleep and exercise — Both significantly impact attention and emotional regulation
- Practice self-compassion — ADHD is not a character flaw; it's a neurological difference that responds to proper support
