What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. These shifts go far beyond normal ups and downs—they can be severe enough to damage relationships, impair job performance, and affect daily functioning.
At Envision Medical Care in Ripley, WV, our behavioral health team provides comprehensive assessment and treatment for individuals living with bipolar disorder.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar I Disorder
Defined by manic episodes lasting at least 7 days or by manic symptoms so severe they require immediate hospitalization. Depressive episodes typically last at least 2 weeks. Episodes of mixed features (both manic and depressive symptoms simultaneously) are also possible.
Bipolar II Disorder
Defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes (less severe than full manic episodes). People with Bipolar II may be misdiagnosed with depression because their hypomanic episodes may not seem unusual.
Cyclothymic Disorder
Periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms lasting for at least 2 years. The symptoms do not meet the diagnostic requirements for a hypomanic or depressive episode.
Recognizing Manic Episodes
During a manic episode, a person may experience:
- Elevated mood — Feeling unusually happy, energetic, or irritable
- Decreased need for sleep — Feeling rested after only a few hours
- Rapid speech — Talking very fast, jumping between topics
- Racing thoughts — Ideas coming quickly, difficulty concentrating
- Increased activity — Taking on multiple projects, restlessness
- Risky behavior — Spending sprees, reckless driving, impulsive decisions
- Grandiosity — Inflated sense of self-importance or abilities
Recognizing Depressive Episodes
During a depressive episode, a person may experience:
- Persistent sadness — Feeling empty, hopeless, or tearful
- Loss of interest — No pleasure in activities once enjoyed
- Sleep changes — Sleeping too much or too little
- Fatigue — Feeling drained of energy
- Difficulty concentrating — Trouble making decisions or remembering things
- Appetite changes — Significant weight loss or gain
- Feelings of worthlessness — Excessive guilt or self-blame
- Thoughts of death — Suicidal ideation or preoccupation with death
Why Early Recognition Matters
Bipolar disorder typically develops in the late teens or early adult years. However, it can occur at any age. Early recognition and treatment are crucial because:
- Untreated bipolar disorder tends to worsen over time
- Early intervention can prevent severe episodes and hospitalizations
- Proper treatment dramatically improves quality of life
- Relationships and careers can be preserved with effective management
